Genre Jump Re-write

Different Genres of music have a completely different sound than one another. With Big Tymers classified as the 'rap/hip-hop' and The devil Wears Prada as the 'Screamo' genre, there are bound to be different listeners. With Big Tymers, you can probably understand the sound a lot easier than DWP's version. Big Tymers sing 'Still Fly' smoothly and at a decent pace. DWP on the other hand has a screaming hard to understand singer. With DWP's version, they increase the sound of instrumentals and add the lyrics in a screaming voice. It would be easier for people wholisten to screamo to understand the lyrics than it woukd be for somebody who has never heard it before. With Big Tymers version, it seems they rely on the pronunciation of the lyrics rather backup sound even though it adds a unique sound. With DWP you may realize they rely more on instrmuentals rather than how you can understand the lyrics. I believe different listeners are attracted to different genres of music and if people are bound to like DWP they would be able to understand the lyrics because they listen to other screamo bands. I understand how it would be hard for someone to not know what the singer is saying if they were not used to screamo music.

Music Video Differences

Big Tymers created a music video for the song 'Still Fly' when they first brought it to the public. The video basically represents a bunch of black people showing off all the cars and money they have. They have a bunch of random ass chicks chillin in parts of the videos dancing on eachother. It's a very stereotypical video in which black people flaunt what they have if they have it. The Devil Wears Prada on the other hand, did not remake a video. The fans of DWP create their own videos of the new song. Some kids play the song on their instruments and others actually just make a video of themselves just having fun. Many people take videos of DWP at shows when they are performing the song. I think that is more realistic than the stereotypical showing off how much money Big Tymers has and how they spend it. The song 'Still Fly' to Big Tymers is how they live their lives, but when DWP created the song, they sing it for fun and other people create their own videos/slideshows of DWP pictures and clips from shows. Sometimes it's sweet to see all the nice cars and such in the original 'Still Fly,' but i prefer to see the bands on stage in a video with the intense amounts of people around all listening to the music and jumping to it, not just a bunch of nasty hoes that conducted AIDS prancing around in a video.

Created for the better?

The Devil Wears Prada was sued for remaking Big Tymer's 'Still Fly.' DWP did not get the permission to perform the song live as one of their own. The Devil Wears Prada decided to play the ' Still Fly' song at Warped Tour during the summer of 2008. When Big TymerS found out about the song, they decided to sue DWP. The band did not get into a defying debt because they make decent money being in the music industry. I believe it was a bit rediculous for Big Tymers' to sue DWP. The Devil wears Prada gave credit to Big Tymers each time they would play the song. Later on during Warped Tour, DWP still continued to play the song because they said they didn't give a fuck what happened. I believe the song is extremely badass because the song is so boss. Big Tymers need to get over themselves, nobody cares about them anymore, and since DWP gave credit to the original artist, i think it's only fair to allow them to touch up the song for a different group of listeners. Big Tymers should be glad they get more interest in their lyrics, even though DWP had to remake the song for it to happen.

Post 6 genre jump

Rap V. Crunk/Screamo

The defenition of rap is: A form of popular music emphasizing spoken rhymes over heavily rhythmic backing tracks [http://www.allwords.com/word-rap+music.html]
The defenition of screamo is: A genre of aggressive lo-fi guitar driven music with predominantly screaming vocals, while preserving structural aspects of the emocore/hardcore emo genres of the early 1990's

While DWP is a popular screamo band, you have Big Tymers, which is a rap genre. When DWP remade Big Tymer's "Still Fly," they redid the whole vocals. In the rap version of "Still Fly," there is a slow pace to the song leaning towards r&b music. The song is sung by a black man in a deep voice. While DWP remakes the song, they have a more powerful lively voice and a constant scream quick pace throughout the song. I believe the sound of how the lyrics are sung contributes to attracting a completely different group of listeners. I enjoyed the song before it was remade but since DWP remade it so lively and powerful, I enjoy the new version a lot better. I believe the sound of whoever is singing plays a big role in why people like the music they listen to. I wouldn't want to listen to some old hag singing slow, or a little kid trying to sing the alphabet. . . I believe this screamo/crunk genre grabs my attention more than a slow pace boring song because i like to listen to a more powerful sound. I do make exceptions for some slow songs, but overall I am more interested in the way the vocalist makes the music sound, would you agree?

Do you think the song is made for fun? Or is it true life?

When the Devil Wears Prada recreated the song 'still fly' originally created by Big Tymers, I will argue that the song has no relation to DWP's life. DWP was asked to put a song onto the Punk Goes Crunk CD along with other punk kind of bands. Each band selected, recieved a rap song to remake. DWP selected still fly and did what I believe is a phenomenal job. This song does not reflect DWP at all. This band isn't really in it for the cars, money and chicks; they more-so do it for the love of the music even though they benefit from their paycheck. DWP decided to create the song because it was an opportunity for them to have change of lyrics and sung about somthing they usually don't. Big Tymer, when creating the song did it for the fun and selected minimal parts of the song in which are true. He does have expensive cars and he did score one from shaq. Overall DWP just remade the song for fun.

Post 4- Breakdown

[Breakdown] Let me slide in the Benz with the fished out fins
Impala Loud pipes, Drinking that Hen
Its the birdy birdy man ill do it again
In the Cadillac truck 24's with 10's
Looking at my Gucci its about that time 6 bad broads flying in at 9
New Suburban truck with the paint job showin'
Black and white and red and gold and
Bodies on the Roadster Lexus
You know with that hard top beamer
Mommy thats your truck
I'm coming up the hood been lovely
New shoes on the whip and I wake up the bubbley
430 lex with convertible top
the rims keep spinning every time I stop
I got a superman Benz that I scored from shaq
With a old school Caddy with a diamond in the back

Within this breadown, the artist is talking about his cars. He begins talking about the mercedes benz and how it is decked out following with the impala with roaring pipes in which he is drinking by [' drinkin that hen......' -hennessy, alcoholic beverage-] He claims to be the birdy bird man, obiously named for being so flyy in relation to wings/flying.; in which he would drink in it again. When he talks about getting into the cadillac truck he talks about 24's [big rims] with 10's [drugs/ 10mg] Following with 'looking at my gucci, it's about that time,' he is referring to his gucci interior and getting into his ride and all of a sudden [six bad broads flying in at 9] 6 hoes are coming up to his left. Later he begins to talk about the paint job on his new suburban and the body work of his roadstar lexus that has a hard top which he gave to his mom i am assuming considering he said 'mommy, that's your truck.' He then talks about 'coming up the hood been lovely,' as in his mom provided well for him and he is setting out on his future probably recognizing what his mom has helped him with before he became famous. He then talks about 'new shoes on the whip' which in reference i think he is reffering to new rims/wheels? He ends the break down with the 430 lex and it's convertible top and the spinners on his rims keep spinning when he stops. Then he wraps up with talking about the car he got from shaq [basket ball star] and an old schol caddy [cadillac] with a diamond in the back.

overall, its about cars and possibly him visiting home giving his mom a roadster lexus when getting famous? Also just describing his ride[s] .

Post3

When in class last Monday, I got together with my group. We discussed our songs and the meanings behind them. They had decided to agree on my argument that the song was in a nutshell about still being fly [cool/popular/sharp] while free loading off his mother. When you look into the lyrics of Still Fly, you will notice that he quotes "i've got everything in my momma's name, but that's ok cuz i'm still fly." With this, you can see that he gets all of his necessities from his mom.
Throughout the song, he talks about how he has expensive clothing, cars and whatever else he decides to sing about. He doesn't have a job but he still stays fly. You can think when he says 'cuz i'm hood rich' he could possibly reffering to hustling. I honestly believe the overall purpose is to flaunt what he has and he is proud to be a free loading momma's boy.
Including 'gator boots with a pimped out gucci suit' he obviously likes to look good when he's out in the town. He doesn't have a job, an he knows he's still fly, because he gets what he wants.

Still Fly Analysis

This blog is a student run project to delve into Still Fly written by Big Tymers and sung by The Devil Wears Prada. The posts that follow will contain a textual and contextual analysis of the lyrics, the writer’s word choice, how the music emphasizes certain lyrics, and how those lyrics function in the world.

I am particularly interested in seeing what responses, memories and feelings these lyrics evoke in myself as I continue to peel back the layers of meaning. And less interested in interviews given by the artist on the lyrics, although I may include some of those later on in my project.

Later, this blog will also feature an analysis of the official music video associated with the song.

The Lyrics of "Still Fly"

Whats up Fresh , its our turn baby

Gator Boots, with the pimped out Gucci suit
Ain't got no job, but I stay sharp
Can't pay my rent, cause all my money's spent
but thats OK, cause I'm still fly

gotcha car play gems on shine, said its mine, get a mink, baby girl lets ride
You da Numba 1 stunna, and we gonna glide
and go straight to the mall, and turn out the inside
Prowler Gucci full length leather, Burbons cooler, Coogi sweater
twenty inches pop my feather, The Bird man daddy I fly in any weather
Alligator seats with the head in the inside
Swine on the dash, G-Wagon so Fly
Numba 1 don't tangle and twisle
when it come to these cars I am that nigga
The Gucci with the matching interior
3 wheel ride with the tire in the middle
Its Fresh and stunna and we like brothers,
We shine like paint daddy this our summer

Gator Boots, with the pimped out Gucci suit
Ain't got no job, but I stay sharp
Can't pay my rent, cause all my money's spent
but thats OK, cause I'm still fly
got a quarter tank gas in my new E-class
But that's alright cause I'm gon' ride
got everything in my moma's name
but I'm hood rich ba dpajkdljf;laksjdf

Have you ever seen the crocodile seats in the truck ?
Turn around and sit it down and let em' bite ya butt
See, the steering wheel is Fendi, dashboard Armani,
With Your baby momma playa is where u can find me
Pushing through the parking lot on 24's Cadillac Escalade with the chromed out nose
With the navigation arrow headed straight to iHop
Aunt Jamima really loves me cause my syrup is so hot
Put the Caddy up, Start the 3 wheel Benz
Hyper white lights, ultra violet lens
Sumitomo tires and they gotta be run flat
T.V. where the horn go, boy can you top that ?
I'ma show you some shit rookie press that button
The trunk went Eh-eh and all of a sudden
4 15's didn't see no wire's, and then I heard boom from the amplifiers
